What is a charter school?

Charter schools fit in a niche between private and public schools.  They are funded with public money (except for their facilities), and they are an alternative to regular public schools systems.   They are designed to meet the needs of students who aren't well suited for traditional school environments.  Charter schools can be privately operated and sponsored by an existing public school board or a county board of education.  Charter schools must be non-sectarian, and they cannot charge tuition or discriminate by residency, race, religion, or economic status.

Are there admission requirements?

Options for Youth accepts any student who:
(1) is at the 7th to 12th grade level and under the age of 20*;

(2) is not enrolled in another diploma program; and

(3) resides within the county of the chartering school district or one of its contiguous counties.

*Options for Youth will continue to serve students 20 years of age or older who are currently enrolled in the program, have been continuously enrolled since the age of 19, and are making satisfactory progress (4 credits per month).  If on or after the 20th birthday, a student fails to make satisfactory progress in any given month, discontinues enrollment for any reason, or turns 23 years of age, the student's enrollment will be terminated with no option to return.

Can students enroll simultaneously in another private or public school?

Charter school students may not be enrolled in another diploma program, but may be enrolled in a community college, adult school, or ROP for courses not offered by the charter school.

Can students who have received a G.E.D. enroll at Options for Youth?

Yes.  However, students who have received a high school diploma are not eligible for enrollment.

How often do students have to attend Options for Youth?

Students are required to meet with their teachers minimally twice per week for one hour each visit and may be required to attend small group instruction if additional help is needed in English or math.

Is the diploma received at Options for Youth the same as a diploma received at a traditional high school?

Yes.  Options for Youth is a public school approved by the California State Board of Education and meets or exceeds all state graduation requirements.

How will my child benefit by attending Options for Youth?

Options for Youth students build close relationships with their teachers and are provided a safe learning environment that allows them to thrive.

Is Options for Youth the right school for my child?

Traditional school programs are not a good fit for all students.  Option for Youth's program offers flexibility and independence while simultaneously ensuring regular one-on-one contact with highly qualified instructors who teach, monitor progress, assign homework, and administer weekly tests and quizzes.
