CAHSEE

 

CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam) - The state's high school exit exam is an important indicator of student success in English Language Arts (ELA) and math; it is a prerequisite for earning a diploma. The following represent 2009-2010 passage rates for each subject, as well as the percentage improvement for the previous year: 

  • Options For Youth - Burbank: 77% ELA, one-point decrease; 65% math, four-point gain compared to the previous year
  • Options For Youth - San Gabriel: 75% ELA, two-point increase; 62% math, one-point gain compared to the previous year
  • Options For Youth - Upland: 77% ELA, one point increase; 59% math, seven-point decrease compared to the previous year
  • Options For Youth - Victor Valley: 74% ELA, three-point decrease; 61% math, eight-point decrease compared to the previous year
  • Options For Youth - San Juan: 86% ELA, six-point increase; 76% math, seven-point gain compared to the previous year
  • Options For Youth - Hermosa Beach: 84% ELA and 57% math (This is the first year for this charter)
  • Options For Youth - San Bernardino: 43% ELA and 23% math (This is the first year for this charter)

OFY has boosted resources in recent years for professional development for teachers, curriculum, Saturday schools, technology, field trips, assessment and other programs.

 

 

 

 

Student Rights for Intensive Instruction for the CAHSEE Exam

If a student completes their 12th grade year at Options For Youth and has not passed the CAHSEE exam they have the right to access Intensive Instruction to pass the CAHSEE. Assembly Bill 347 states that this instruction must be offered for two years after leaving the school.

Pursuant to California Education Code section 37254,

  1. Pupils, including English learners, who have not passed one or both parts of the California High School Examination (CAHSEE) by the end of grade 12 are entitled to receive intensive instruction and services for up to two consecutive academic years after completion of grade 12 or until they pass both parts of the CAHSEE, whichever comes first;
  2. English learners, who have not passed one or both parts of the CAHSEE by the end of grade 12, are entitled to receive services to improve English proficiency as needed to pass those parts of the CAHSEE not yet passed for up to two consecutive years after completion of grade 12 or until they pass both parts of the CAHSEE, whichever comes first; and
  3. Pupils, who have not passed one or both parts of the CAHSEE by the end of grade 12, have the right to file a complaint regarding intensive instruction and services under the Uniform Complaint Procedures if he or she was not provided the opportunity to receive intensive instruction and services for up to two consecutive academic years after completion of grade 12 or until they pass both parts of the CAHSEE, whichever comes first.

California Education Code 35186 creates a procedure for the filing of complaints concerning deficiencies related to the lack of opportunity to receive intensive instruction and services to pupils who did not pass one or both parts of the high school exit examination by the end of Grade 12.
