Fontana High senior wins title as Inland Empire's Best Teen Chef - DailyBulletin.com Fontana High senior wins title as Inland Empire's Best Teen Chef Created: 03/25/2009 01:05:00 PM PDT Fontana High student Theresa Marquez captured the title of the Inland Empire's Best Teen Chef recently in a competition held at the International Culinary School at the Art Institute of California in San Bernardino. Marquez, who will graduate in June, won a $3,000 scholarship to the Culinary School, which she will enter beginning with the summer term. Runnerup in the competition was Brittain Madrid of Fontana and A.B. Miller High, while Claremont's Briannah Clark, who attends Options for Youth in Ontario, was third. They were among 11 area high school seniors invited to the competition. Each participant prepared a four-ounce sauteed chicken breast, sauteed broccoli, rice pilaf and a garnish of their own design, as well as a shrimp cocktail, using the materials provided. The contestants worked from 10:15 to 12:45 p.m. before the judging. "Your meal and preparation were flawless," one of the judges told Marquez following the judging. "You have a wonderful career ahead of you, I'm honored." Chef Eyad Joseph, who is academic director for the International Culinary School, praised her, "I saw you get past your nerves after 10 minutes then you settled into a zone. It was brilliant." In addition to winning the scholarship, Marquez will represent the local school at the May 9 National Best Teen Chef final round competition in Charlotte, N.C.
